When A RoR Job Post Goes Viral

On July 9, we launched a job post to hire a Ruby on Rails Developer.  It went viral.

It also worked. We’re excited to report that we hired a lead engineer. More on that later.

All Eyes on Us

During a 48 hour period, almost 9,000 people visited our job post.

Where Were They From, Georgraphically?

Over two days, we welcomed visitors from 109 different countries. 50 different countries were each the source of 10 or more visits. 17 countries were each the source of over 50 visits.

The United States, United Kingdom, Brazil, Canada, Germany, India, France and Netherlands were each the source of over 100 visits.

Only the United States was the source of over 1,000 visits. We received 5,394 visits from the United States. Boom!

Where Were They From, On the Internet?

  • 38% of visits came from Hacker News
  • 14.5% from Facebook (12.5% web/2% mobile web)
  • 13% from Twitter
  • 1.75% from Google
  • 0.7% from LinkedIn
  • 0.6% from Reddit
  • 0.09% from Google Plus
27% of visits came from what Google Analytics annoyingly calls (direct)/(none), which means we can’t get data on them.
Overall, Google Analytics shows 90 different traffic sources over two days.

Operating Systems
This job is very technical, so it’s interesting to look at the technology our visitors were using.
  • 48% of visits came from Macs
  • 29% from Windows
  • 10% from iOS devices
  • 9% from Linux
  • 3% from Android
Browsers
  • 61% of visits were using Chrome
  • 15% Firefox
  • 12% Safari
  • 7% “Mozilla Compatible Agent”
  • 2.4% Internet Explorer
  • 2.2% Android Browser
  • 0.7% Opera

Just the Beginning - Code @ Craft Coffee

On Tuesday, July 10 we launched a job post at http://code.craftcoffee.com.

It went viral.

On this blog, we’ll start out by looking at how we created this creative campaign, analyze the traffic and report on the results.

Then, the person we hire will take over this blog.  And we hope it will become a place to talk about the innovative work we’ll do together at Craft Coffee.

More posts will follow.  This is just the beginning.

Want to take over this blog? Apply to join us at Craft Coffee.

About me

Coffee is a mega-billion dollar industry. Starbucks alone is worth over $40B.
The monthly subscription trend is nice. But don't let it blind you from seeing the big picture.
We're building the post-Starbucks reality. It will be an epic battle.
And yes, technology is absolutely at the core of how we're going to win. A lot of people try to tell us we should outsource our tech or hire low level developers because, hey, it's just a shopping cart, right? No, not right. We couldn't possibly disagree more.
